The Camden holiday star on Mt. Battie holds a very special place in my heart. It brings me so much peace and hope when I see it from my studio and kitchen windows. It is usually lit from Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve and can be seen for miles. As the pandemic was ramping up in March of 2020, I was going through radiation treatment for breast cancer. Because the star gives me so much hope, I wondered if my community would take comfort if the star was re-lit. I posted my request on a local Facebook page and my wish was granted!
Volunteers have assembled and mounted the 22 foot star on top of the stone tower each year for over 50 years and then travel up the mountain each day to fuel the generator that provides the power. From donated time and fuel, to lightbulbs and steel rods, this star is a community affair.
